Description

A traditional Romanian New Year’s dish made with pork and sauerkraut, symbolizing prosperity and good luck.


Ingredients

  • 1 kg pork (shoulder or ribs)
  • 500 g sauerkraut
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add diced onion and minced garlic, sauté until golden.
  3. Add pork pieces and brown on all sides.
  4. Stir in sauerkraut, bay leaf, black pepper, and paprika.
  5. Cover with water and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until pork is tender.
  6. Season with salt to taste and serve hot.

  • For extra flavor, add smoked bacon or sausages.
