Description
Traditional Hungarian New Year’s dishes to celebrate the holiday.
Ingredients
Scale
- 500g pork (shoulder or leg)
- 200g smoked sausage
- 1 large onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 1 tsp caraway seeds
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 500g sauerkraut
- 2 tbsp lard or oil
Instructions
- Chop the pork into bite-sized pieces.
- Dice the onion and mince the garlic.
- Heat lard in a pot and sauté the onion until golden.
- Add pork, garlic, paprika, caraway seeds, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Cook for 10 minutes.
- Add sauerkraut and enough water to cover. Simmer for 1 hour.
- Slice the smoked sausage and add it to the pot. Cook for another 20 minutes.
- Serve hot with fresh bread.
Notes
- Adjust paprika to your taste.
- For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine.
- Best served with pickles.
