Description
A traditional Jewish-style herring dish, marinated with onions and spices.
Ingredients

- 500g herring fillets
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp black peppercorns
- 2 bay leaves
Instructions
- Rinse the herring fillets and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
- Layer the herring and sliced onions in a glass jar.
- In a saucepan, combine vinegar, water, sugar, peppercorns, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil.
- Pour the hot marinade over the herring and onions.
- Seal the jar and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
Notes
- Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Serve chilled with rye bread or boiled potatoes.
