Description

Kapusta Wigilijna is a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dish made with sauerkraut and mushrooms.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g sauerkraut
  • 200g dried mushrooms
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 5 allspice berries
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak dried mushrooms in warm water for 30 minutes.
  2. Chop onion and sauté in oil until translucent.
  3. Add drained sauerkraut to the pan.
  4. Drain mushrooms, chop them, and add to the pan.
  5. Add bay leaf and allspice berries.
  6. Simmer on low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  7. Season with salt and pepper before serving.

  • Traditionally served with boiled potatoes.
  • Can be prepared a day ahead for better flavor.
